Superior National Forest was established in 1909 and is the largest national forest east of the Mississippi at three-million acres bordered by Canada, Lake Superior and Voyageurs National Park. This forest is home to the BWCAW (Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness). While the winter activities above are allowed in Superior National Forest, they are only allowed in certain areas so make sure to go to the Forest Service website to check where they are allowed in the forest, and what trails are currently open depending on the weather conditions. There are two privately owned Resorts/Ski Hills operated within Superior National Forest. They are Giants Ridge and Lutsen Mountain. Giants Ridge Lutsen Mountain Hiawatha National Forest - Michigan’s Upper Peninsula Hiawatha National Forest is nearly one million acres of land and home to 6 lighthouses. It also borders three great lakes, Lake Superior, Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. There are also three islands within the forest. Winter activities include Cross Country Ski Trails, Snowshoeing, Ice Fishing and Snowmobiling. Ottawa National Forest - Michigan The Ottawa National Forest is one million acres and is located in the western Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Extending from the south shore of Lake Superior to Wisconsin. Winter Activities include Snowmobiling, Cross-Country Skiing and Snowshoeing, Alpine and Nordic Skiing and Ice Fishing. There are over 450 miles of groomed snowmobile trails. 39 miles of Cross-Country/Snowshoe trails. 500 named lakes for Ice Fishing. Huron-Manistee National Forest - Michigan This forest is located in the northern half of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan and is nearly one million acres. Some of the most popular trails include the Pine, Manistee, Au Sable and Pere Marquette. Winter activities include snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. There are 600 miles of snowmobile trails throughout the forest. 16 Cross-Country Skiing Trails and 9 snowshoeing trails. That’s It For Now! Where will your outdoor adventures take you?
